SAC Positive Parent Exchange a Rousing Success!

On October 21st, more than two dozen PHCS parents participated in the very first SAC Positive Parent Exchange.  Between bites of awesome appetizers and delectable desserts, parents shared great ideas for everything from getting kids to try new foods to finding a special needs baseball league.  "The interaction was great!" said one parent.  "There's a need for this kind of exchange."  Several attendees said it was good to know that, as parents of Autistic children" "we're all in the same boat" and not alone with our challenges.

The SAC team will compile the ideas that were shared and add them to the SAC Blog on the PHCS Web site (go to www.princeton-house.org, blogs, SAC).  A big thanks to all SAC members and participants who brought food to share and helped with setup an cleanup!  We'll announce the date of our next Parent Exchange soon - and hope ALL parents will join us for the opportunity to relax, snack and share.

Final Parent Etiquette Training

Your last opportunity to have the Parent Etiquette Training will be Tuesday, November 18th at 8:30 at the MSHS.  Please call Barbara or Tara to reserve your spot.

Uniforms

Please be aware that your students must wear their Dennis Uniforms.  We have had many students wearing non approved shorts and long pants.  We have a Uniform Exchange so if you need uniforms, send in a request and if we have the right size we will send them home with your child.  Otherwise, you will be called and asked to bring  your child the appropriate clothing or your child will be sent home.

Miracles Happen by Liana & Ricardo James

We all know how hard it is to receive the news that your child has Autism, the shock is greater when you learn that your second child has it too.  We noticed that Liana's speech development was delayed but everyone told us it was normal due to her exposure to two languages, when Liana turned 3 we knew something was wrong.  She did not talk, she made a lot of sounds but no words.  She sorted toys by color or size and placed them in a straight line all the time.  The microwave & dishwasher noise made her cry, she made no eye contact.  It was really sad for us.
Alexa was 18 months old when she began losing the few words that she had.  She was flapping her hands constantly, covering her ears but this time we knew, we didn't have to wait.
They did not play with each other, they cried a lot and had sudden changes in moods.  We started desperately looking for help. We were frustrated but with tons of love and wishing for a miracle.  They started at a public school an they improved a little bit but not as much as we wanted.
Some friends told us about Princeton House.  We decided to move them.  The school was far away from home but we did not care we just wanted the best for our girls.  We were put on the waiting list.  Two weeks later we received the call that PHCS had an opening for our daughters.  We were so happy.  So with a bag full of hope, faith and love, we started on our journey.  Miracles happened, yes!  Their teachers, assistants and therapists work really hard with them and they have made great improvements.
Today, Liana and Alexa are able to communicate verbally, they read and write, they interact with each other and with their peers.  They love music and art, they ride horses, go ice skating and they love Princeton House.
